Oats payasam..yes that's what i made for my small Onam sadya today.Onam is on the 16th of September but i made the sadya today as its a holiday today and my achan(dad) is here.Monday , the 16th is a working day and so without anyone around to take care of little Shanaya , i will not be able to make a sadya.I decided to make oats payasam as it doesnt take much time and tastes good too.I also made sambaar, kurukku kaalan and cabbage thoran..that's all i could manage single handedly while doing all other things for my sweetheart Shanaya..!!phew!!
I made oats payasam in a similar manner like semiya payasam..I did not have semiya and that's why i thought of this alternative.I had tried a very small quantity of oats payasam a few days back .Navin who refuses to have oats as porridge gulped down this payasam..so i decided to make it again today as my dad also loves oats.So the healthy oats took the form of payasam today. This is one way of getting kids to have oats..turn it into a payasam..!!!
Ingredients i used
Quick cooking oats- 1/2 cup
Milk-3 cups
Sugar - a little less than half cup.add according to taste.
Sweetened condensed milk-1/2cup
Ghee-3tbsp
Cashewnuts-6-8 pices,broken
Raisins-6-7
Cardamom powder-1/4th tspn.
How i made it.
Add the quick cooking oats and sugar to milk and bring to boil.Lower the flame and keep stirring. After 2-3 minutes add the milkmaid and keep stirring for a few more minutes. In a separate small bowl take some hot payasam and dissolve cardamom powder in this.Take the payasam off the stove and add the cardamom powder mix.
In a small kadai ,heat the ghee and fry the cashew and raisins and add to the oats payasam.
The simple but delicious oats payasam is ready!!
Note:
If at any stage you feel that the payasam is too thick, add a little more milk and adjust sugar .
You can skip the sweetened condensed milk.Increase the quantity of milk and keep stirring till the milk turms to a yellowish/beige colour.remember to check the sweetness.
You can add rose essence or rose water instead of cardamom powder.
